First Time Visit

Please be sure to stop in to pick up the new patient forms to be filled out and brought back for your initial consultation and treatment. If for some reason this is not possible, please arrive 15-20 minutes early to complete the forms in the lobby. This will allow us to see you sooner.

It is important to eat something light prior to treatment. It is also best to wear loose fitting clothing for comfort, and so needles can be inserted with only a simple adjustment of your attire.

*Please do not wear any scented body lotions, perfumes, or colognes as some patients are sensitive to chemicals and scents.

The first visit lasts approximately 1.5 hours. The initial consultation includes a thorough intake with pulse and tongue diagnosis- diagnostic tools unique to Chinese medicine.  During this visit, I will ask several questions about specific symptoms you are experiencing, your emotional state, and prescription medications to get a complete picture of your health. These questions are pertinent because we focus on the underlying causes of disease, to treat each person as a whole. We will also take some time to discuss your concerns, and health goals so that I may come up with a plan of care for future treatments.

Once I have determined a diagnosis, I will develop a treatment plan incorporating acupuncture or several other modalities depending on your particular needs. Nutritional, lifestyle, and herbal recommendations may also be included. Please feel free to ask any questions about your treatment so that you are able to feel comfortable throughout your healing process.

You will feel a light tap just below the skin surface upon insertion. After that, you may notice a variety of sensations. Some sensations may include a feeling of warmth, heaviness, tingling or pressure around the needle or along the meridian depending on your level of sensitivity to the energy. These sensations are normal and desirable. The needles are generally left in 20-40 minutes while you rest. In general, acupuncture promotes relaxation so it is common to experience a feeling of calm and wellness afterward – an indication that the body’s natural healing mechanisms have been activated.

After the first intake the following treatments will be more limited to the specific problem and will take less time. Most subsequent visits last about 1 hour.

Typically acupuncture treatments are given once a week. Acute, painful conditions may be treated 2-3 times a week until the condition becomes stable and comes under control. After attaining the results they are looking for, many people come in once a month for a  “tune-up” or as needed for maintenance.

As your body’s energy begins to reset and redirect, internal chemicals and hormones are stimulated and healing begins to take place. In Oriental medicine, these physiological responses are encouraged. During this, you may find changes in your sleep, appetite, bowel or urination patterns. It is also possible that an emotional state may be triggered while the body finds its way back to a state of balance. Do not be concerned, as they are simply indications that the acupuncture is working.
